Conduent redesigned a week-long lecture-heavy program for second year tax professionals into a blended program with engaging and relevant practice activities. The new program utilizes the Intrepid Hub platform for pre-and post classroom learning and a custom digital game board to guide the classroom portion of the program. Team competitions in the classroom include game-show style quizzes for knowledge reinforcement, simulations requiring strategizing and communication in addition to technical skills, extra credit challenges, and digital “cards” containing scenarios that teams must respond to or engage with another team to solve. We also developed a custom scoreboard. As a result of the redesign, both participant engagement and participants' ability to apple the learning on the job increased.

The challenge
Many learners could not see the relevance of the original lecture-heavy program to their jobs, and the levels of engagement and retention were too low to ensure effective learning. It was focused on knowledge content and while it was intended for all second year tax professionals in the firm, much of it was not directly related to their jobs. It lacked sufficient practice, did not anticipate that learners came to the course with different project experience, and did not reflect how tax professionals must work together and communicate well.
The solution
Conduent worked with the client to define learning and practice activities that would be relevant to the learners. We then identified knowledge content needed for the activities that could be addressed via short videos, and additional knowledge that could be presented via self-directed assets after the main program. We then designed a team learning game to encompass the simulation activities and added elements that enabled learners to practice other key competencies. We built a custom game-board with a map to help learners understand the different elements of the program and track their team's progress.
The results
Our redesign helped increase participant engagement while improving their ability to apply the learning on the job.
